A flickin’ Flicker

This is for the edification of my European readers … Woodpeckers come in many varieties in north America.  one of the most attractive is the Northern Flicker which spends more time on the ground eating ants than up trees at this time of the year … and do we have ants for them in our garden!

A very handsome fellow – the French call him the Pic flamboyante because he is.

Tehnical talk … I am quite prooud of these pictures.  I was on the telephone when the bird arrived and had to grab my small camera (Canon G9) and snap these with one hand.  Twelve megapixels and image stabilisation helped, but this is proving to be w cracking little camera as an adjunct to my more profesisonal SLR.  certainly not a family snap camera but a quality machine.
