Pond update

We have had several large groups of White-throated Sparrows visiting the feeders in the last 48 hours with numbers gradually increasing … especially today when the weather has changed from the warm sunshine we had started to get used to back to heavy rain and a cool wind.  Just before the rains started, this fellow felt the need of a drink …

I am intrigued by the fact that while most birds come and dip their feet in the running water over the lip of the fall and some have a discrete dip to wash the feathers, the Starlings always arrive feet first with a big splash and then bounce around flinging water everywhere like a group of kids.  Curioous to know what they get out of it that other birds are not looking for.
